I Think I’m Turning into the Crazy Vintage Bag Lady

I can’t stop buying these bags. Not because I need them but because I simply want to do my part to preserve the heritage and beauty of these lovelies. By now, you might know of my dislike for modern handbags *cough* Coach *cough*. I think I was born in the wrong era. To me there is something so glamorous and beautiful about decades gone by. The craftsmanship and details that went into these simply cannot be matched today. I’ve decided that at this stage of my life, I know myself very well. I know what I like and don’t like. I am known for dressing in skirts and dresses. Rarely do I wear slacks. Now I guess I want to be known as the vintage bag lady too. 🙂

purseladyHere are a few recently thrifted purses.

This intricate embroidered bag that I picked up last weekend. For some reason, the Value Village in St. Catharines has en enormous assortment of interesting purses. I believe this one is made by JR Handbags. Though it has no stamp, I suspect it is a JR because the zipper pull is exactly the same as the black JR handbag further down in this post. JR stands for Julius Resnick, who made quite a name for himself in the 1950s.

Next we have this for real Julius Resnick. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this bag. It reminds me so much of my mother. She laughs when I tell her that I remember her purses. The leather, the gold details, the little footstands on the bottom.

Onto this beaded beauty. I bought this because I had one when I was a little girl and I used to pick the beads off (I don’t know why) and then I threw it away.

???????????????????????????????

Who doesn’t love a good crocheted bag? I mean really. The handles? 1970s anyone? Hello there.

???????????????????????????????

How about this one all decked out in gold? Haven’t we seen enough of silver accents everywhere? Bring back the gold. Bring back the 80s!

???????????????????????????????

This one is soft as butter by Farnell Paris. My daughter wants it and she NEVER wants anything I thrift!

And finally, I admit I don’t believe this is a vintage but it is different and so of course I bought it.

Thrifted Goodies: Bags & Shoes

I am back from the great white north. A few days of rest and relaxation camping in Bear Country did me some good, I made a quick stop to Chicago for business last week as well so I haven’t been able to post anything.

Just quickly sharing a few thrifted finds like this Birks handbag. Now, I hadn’t done any research on these until last night. This might be vintage. It looks like it from the interior. I just thought it was a cute little bag for going out.

If anyone knows anything about these, I’d love to hear from you in the comments.

I also picked up this one. There are no markings on it but it looks old and smells even older! I love when things smell old…I think I might be weird that way.

Vintage bag, no name, no markings.

And the smelly ole inside…

087Next, we have this lovely pair of yellow wedges. No name brand anywhere on them but they are so comfortable and I like the ankle strap. I picked these up at Value Village.

Aren't they cute? I don't think I've ever owned yellow shoes. A great alternative to white or cream for the warm months.

Mr. Restyle was with me when I bought these next ones. In fact, he spotted them. I wasn’t sure. I was afraid they might look old lady like but I secretly really liked them. They are from France! Brand new condition and they are the most comfortable shoes ever!

Oui oui, mais non non to the unpolished pedi (sorry). Should’ve kept the polish on til AFTER I took the pics.

Oh how I wish I were in Paris sipping a drink and having a bite to eat in one of the countless cafes whilst wearing these shoes, a wonderful summer skirt and blouse (perhaps a hat) and watching the world go by!

Who Needs Coach? I’ve Got a Thrifted Handbag Collection

OK, here’s the thing. I don’t like Coach handbags. I know I’m probably in the minority. I just don’t get IT! I think they’re ugly. I know they are all the rage. I know they are some sort of status/fashion symbol kinda thing. I understand that they’re supposedly very well crafted and will last a lifetime. I still don’t like them. At all.

Why, oh why would I want a purse with a bunch of ugly letter ‘C’s all over it that comes in hideous, ugly, colours? I don’t and that’s that. Even if I could justify spending $300+ on a handbag, I STILL wouldn’t buy one cause I just plain don’t like ’em. Vintage Coach bags without the Cs all over them on the other hand…I could see myself picking one up. OK, rant over.

What I do like is my growing collection of thrifted handbags. I’ve only just started buying them so I’ve got a long way to go because what I’ve started with here are pretty much just staples. Nothing special really. The point of this post is to show you that thrift stores can be great alternative places to get handbags. I have yet to strike gold in terms of finding that designer bag that someone’s donated but you never know.

Straw bag-brand new and the perfect look for summer.???????????????????????????????

Vintage Black Clutch-so special it deserves a post of its own.???????????????????????????????

Purple Flower Bag-unique and different. Feels like leather. No brand but I love the softness of the leather, the colour and the vintage-inspired closure.???????????????????????????????

Brown/Purple Paisley Bag-different and stands out from all the other boring brown bags out there. I’ve gotten compliments on this one.???????????????????????????????

Red KGB Bag-a big, roomy bag with handy pockets in the front for phone and office key card. This one’s a little heavy though.

???????????????????????????????

Small Black Leather Wallet Purse-so handy for just dashing out when you only need a wallet, keys and phone.021

Has a removable inner bag. I may shorten the straps and use it like a wristlet.???????????????????????????????

The next time you’re thrifting check out the handbags. You never know!

The Biggest, Bestest, Badass Vintage Jewellery Box Ever

Mr. Restyle bought me a jewellery box before we married in 1991. It’s served its purpose very well but I could never fit everything in it and part of the front door had broken off. Sadly, it was time to say goodbye. I picked up this absolutely amazing big ass box at Value Village. It is real wood. It’s huge and it fits everything. I love it.

???????????????????????????????

It’s a little beat up but look at those handles and pulls.???????????????????????????????

I don’t have much costume jewellery but what I do have fits beautifully in this box. The top tray holds all of my rings and earrings.???????????????????????????????

Look at that sticker and banner-The Empress! LOL The “queen” of all jewellery boxes. I can’t believe these things were still attached to the box. Someone took good care of this.???????????????????????????????

The bottom tray holds watches, some boxes that I keep charms in and other odds and ends.???????????????????????????????

The bottom drawer and the 2 trays within contain all of my bracelets and necklaces. I like that the necklaces are not hanging on that carousel thing like a regular box. Nothing gets tangled this way.008

And here’s the best part. There is an inscription on the bottom tray that reads “Ethel from Lionel. Happy Birthday 1966.” How incredibly sweet is that? I wonder who Ethel and Lionel are/were. That’s the thing about buying old stuff. It all has a story. I hope they were happy. Maybe they were married and lived a long life and he bought her many, many beautiful things to put in this jewellery box. Happy Birthday Ethel!???????????????????????????????
